PDR TECHNIQUE / EXTERNAL PULLING

Glue pulling in PDR.

Good pulling starts before the tab goes on.

External pulling can be an effective option for selected cosmetic dents, but tab choice and pulling force cannot substitute for inspection.

The role of external pulling

Specialist adhesive and a temporary tab allow a controlled outward load to be applied from the outer surface where appropriate. The aim is not to yank an entire dent out in one movement. Pulling is part of a sequence of observation, tension management, corrective stages and finishing.

Suitability must come first

Repainted, poorly bonded, aged or compromised finishes may separate when an adhesive tab is removed. Sharp folds, previous filler and some edge conditions may be inappropriate for external pulling. Surface temperature, contamination, tab geometry and access for controlled force matter, as do manufacturer restrictions and the particular vehicle’s material.

Force path and crown management

Where a tab is placed changes which metal receives load. Pull direction should follow an assessed repair plan rather than the apparent centre of a photographed dent. An uncontrolled pull may create a high spot while leaving surrounding tension intact. Crowns and local highs may need professional corrective work before the final inspection.

Tools have different purposes

A compact lifter, controlled slide hammer, cold-glue approach and traditional hot-glue technique are not interchangeable just because each applies outward force. Load shape, reversibility, room for the operator and panel response change the choice. Even a strong-looking repair is assessed in reflected light rather than judged by tab release alone.

Safety and sensible boundaries

Heated adhesives can burn skin or damage adjacent materials; slide-hammer recoil and detached tabs present physical hazards. Mains electrical equipment must be appropriate for the working environment, and adhesive residue should be dealt with without compromising the finish. This is a technical overview for education, not a procedure for untrained users.

How it joins the complete process

External pulling belongs within the wider discipline: inspect the panel, identify materials and previous repairs, decide on suitable access, control highs and assess the completed surface. Explore InspectaDent’s PDR foundation lessons and technical reference for the decisions around the tool.
